What a Pneumatic Breaker Actually Does
A pneumatic breaker (also called an air hammer or jackhammer) takes compressed air from a portable compressor and uses it to drive a piston that strikes a chisel or moil point at high speed. No motor, no fuel tank — just an air hose and a compressor doing the work. That’s why they’ve stayed the default choice on sites where hydraulic breakers or carrier-mounted equipment can’t reach: stairwells, bridge decks, trenches, tight utility corridors.
They’re used for:

One distinction worth knowing: a breaker strikes the steel but never rotates it — pure percussion, not cutting. That’s different from a pneumatic drill, which impacts and rotates a carbide-tipped bit to bore holes into rock. All five run on 6 bar (roughly 87–90 psi) — the same operating pressure across the range, so switching between weight classes on the same site doesn’t mean switching compressors, as long as the compressor delivers enough CFM for the heaviest unit you’re running.
Two things trip people up here. First: heavier isn’t automatically better. A 40 kg breaker moves less air-efficiently per blow than a 20 kg unit and will wear out an operator on a full shift of overhead or awkward-angle work — match the tool to the job, not the job to the biggest tool you can rent. Second: your compressor has to keep up. The PB 1240 pulls 81 cfm at full pressure. If your compressor is rated closer to 60 cfm, you’ll lose blow rate and impact force before the breaker itself is the problem.
Sizing Your Compressor
Rough rule: pick a compressor rated at least 15–20% above the breaker’s listed air consumption, to cover line losses and hose length. For the PB 1210 (48 cfm), a 60 cfm compressor gives you headroom. For the PB 1240 (81 cfm), you’re looking at 100 cfm minimum. Running two breakers off one compressor means adding their consumption together — this is where undersized rentals cause the most on-site slowdowns we see.
Shank Sizes and Chisels
ACE breakers ship with a standard 32 × 160 mm shank (1¼″ × 6¼″) across the mid-to-heavy range, with the PB 1210 also available in 25 × 108 mm and 28 × 160 mm. Chisel choice matters as much as breaker choice: a moil point for general breaking, a flat chisel for surface work and scaling, a wide chisel for asphalt cutting, a clay spade for trenching, and a tamping tool where you’re compacting rather than breaking. We carry the full range, along with the correct shank size to match each ACE model — mismatched shanks are a common cause of jammed or damaged retainers on rented tools.
